Before the Better Lunchtimes Project, Pirehill First School struggled with a range of lunchtime issues.
Karen, the headteacher, recalls, "We had too many accidents and behaviour issues. Children were rushing through meals, and the long queues for lunch made everything chaotic." Lunchtime staff also struggled with teamwork, leading to further disorganisation.
However, after the intervention, significant improvements were made. "Playground zones are working well, and now, children enjoy lunchtimes," Karen explains.
One of the biggest transformations has been the sense of support among students: "Our Year 4 children now help the younger ones."
Furthermore, the previously lengthy queues have been reduced to just a short wait at the kitchen hatch, resulting in a calmer environment and less food waste.
Another noteworthy change has been the impact on staff. Karen mentions, "Wet lunchtimes are much calmer now, and the lunchtime staff are much happier."
Lunchtime staff, who had once struggled to work as a team, now collaborate effectively, making the environment far more structured and enjoyable for everyone involved. The process was smooth and supportive, and it empowered the school to make these positive changes.
Pirehill First School is one of the many success stories of the Better Lunchtimes Project, and Karen would certainly recommend it. "Yes!"
she says with confidence, happy to see the lasting impact on both the staff and students.
