Before implementing School Health UK's Better Lunchtimes Project, lunchtime at West Hill was anything but smooth.
Kelly, the principal, recalls the significant challenges they faced daily. “Our lunchtimes were chaotic. Behaviour issues were rampant, first aid incidents were frequent, and the noise was overwhelming. Our staff were overwhelmed and lacked the proper training to manage the lunchtime period effectively." These challenges impacted not only the children’s experience but also the staff’s morale.
Determined to make a change, West Hill embarked on the Better Lunchtimes Project. The results were transformative. "One of the most impactful changes has been the training and support provided to our staff. They are now confident, well-trained, and proactive. Lunchtimes are much calmer, and staff are working together better than ever before," says Kelly.
Behaviour issues, which were once a major concern, have significantly decreased, and first aid incidents are now rare. "The lunchtime atmosphere has completely changed. Children are enjoying themselves, the environment is structured, and it’s much less chaotic," Kelly explains.
The project also improved communication and teamwork among the lunchtime staff. "Our staff are now working together like a well-oiled machine. The support we received to achieve this was second to none," Kelly shares.
The feedback from both the children and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. "We now have a much more enjoyable, calm lunchtime, and staff are happier in their roles. I cannot thank School Health UK enough," Kelly concludes.
Would West Hill recommend School Health UK's Better Lunchtimes Project? "Absolutely," says Kelly.
The school has experienced a remarkable turnaround, with lunchtimes now being a time of calm, organisation, and enjoyment for both students and staff alike.
